Tom and Janie Lovorn


Thomas E. (Tom) Lovorn (Lov’urn=”a pot full of love!”) grew up in Mississippi, being saved at age 9, called to preach at age 12, he served as pastor for his first church when he was 19. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology and Sacred Music (Voice) from Mississippi College. He received the Bachelor of Divinity with Greek and Hebrew and the Master of Divinity degrees from New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary. He earned his Doctor of Theology (Th.D.) from Luther Rice University of Atlanta. Tom has served churches in MS, AL, SC, TN, and VA as Minister of Music and Youth or as Senior Pastor for 56 years. Tom retired from Monumental Baptist Church in Petersburg, VA, in 2004 after almost 19 years as senior pastor; his wife Janie retired as the church’s Music Director. On Easter of 2009 Tom and Janie accepted the pastorate of God’s Storehouse Baptist Church in Richmond, VA. He continues to preach revivals, teach Bible studies, write a weekly Bible column which is published locally and emailed to about 500 people in 25 countries, and he and Janie lead Bibleland and mission trips. For the last 6 years “Dr. Tom” has been Professor of Old and New Testament for online classes.

Post graduate studies include: Courses in psychology from the William S. Hall Psychiatric Institute in Columbia, SC; a diploma from Chicago’s American Institute of Hypnology; a certificate from the Billy Graham School of Evangelism; diplomas from the School of the Prophets of FBC Dallas and Jacksonville, certification of training from the Southern Baptist International Mission Board, certificates of service from the Caribbean Christian Center for the Deaf in Jamaica and Southern Cross Bible Distribution in Thailand and New Zealand, as well as numerous Who’s Who listings.

After serving as pastor for 2 small country churches, Tom was called to be Associate Pastor in Youth and Music for several large churches in MS, AL, and VA. While serving in that position at the First Baptist Church of Suffolk, VA, he married his junior choir director and duet partner, Janie Johnson. They have one married daughter, Christy Stawarz, who with her husband John and 4 children make their home in Prince George, VA.

After marriage, Tom and Janie served the pastorate at FBC Cheraw, SC, and East Ridge Baptist in Chattanooga, TN, before coming to Monumental Baptist Church in Petersburg, VA. While serving as pastor, “Dr. Tom” taught Bible for 10 years in the community college system of South Carolina and for 3 years at the Chattanooga Bible Institute. He has been an accredited seminary extension teacher for Southern Baptists and Luther Rice Seminary, hosting its Video Bible Class. For about 18 months he preached each week over WAVY-TV in Portsmouth, VA. 

Dr. Lovorn has been named Governor’s Goodwill Ambassador to Jamaica by the governors of SC, TN, and VA. Also, he was presented with the Outstanding Citizenship Award by the city of Chattanooga while serving as president of the East Ridge (TN) Ministerial Association and Evangelism Chairman of the Hamilton County SBC Baptist Association. He has enjoyed various positions in the Petersburg Baptist Association, including Evangelism Chairman and president of the Ministerial Association. In retirement, he coordinates overseas mission trips to Jamaica.

Tom and Janie have authored 3 technical church growth manuals together, and Tom has published 2 more in addition to editing his high school and college yearbooks. Tom tells the whole New Testament story using character monologs of Joseph, Peter, John the Baptizer, Paul, and John on Patmos. The Lovorns enjoy leading churches in a 2 hour “Christ in the Passover” dinner showing how the Jewish Passover was fulfilled in the Lord’s Supper. Tom and Janie also sing solos and duets. Their daughter Christy joins them for trios.

The Lovorns have led Bible studies and participated in mission teams to Israel, Jordan, Egypt, Greece (including Macedonia and the islands of Rhodes and Patmos), Turkey, Italy, Switzerland, Thailand, the Mississippi Gulf Coast, New Zealand, Australia, and Jamaica. For 46 years they have been involved with and served on the Executive Board of the Caribbean Christian Centre for the Deaf in Jamaica where they have a foster deaf son and 2 foster deaf daughters. In 2014 Tom and Janie were named Lifetime Executive Board Members.
